A seafront house

Part of an existing development along a creek just outside Jeddah that was abandoned incomplete more than 20 years ago, the remodeling of this single family house for its new owner was driven by their desire to enjoy the seafront setting and have a venue where they and their children can entertain, possibly at the same time.

 

Simplifying the existing structure

The reading of the existing structure has been simplified and refined. An exaggerated overhang has been added to protect the sea facing façade from the harsh afternoon sun, and aligned to an appropriated external annex under a generous terrace. The terrace is on grade with a linear pool, raised to maintain privacy and offer long views of the creek.

 

A second skin

To improve the house’s thermal performance, rigid insulation is added on the outside of the external walls and a white painted aluminum rain screen installed with varying corrugations and levels of perforation providing a hierarchy to openings controlling light and privacy.
