An exoteric structure

The design of this project for twin towers in Jeddah overlooking the sea aspires to produce a powerful response to the many challenging constraints of site and brief. Constructed on landfill and adjacent to the sea, the high water table poses a serious obstacle in creating underground parking. This was one of the reasons that we developed two square planned towers with an exoteric structure that allows within it and on the first 10 floors dedicated ramped parking for each of the two towers. Above that, a mechanical floor separates the parking from the 10 office floors on top, with another mechanical floor separating that from the last 5 office floors.

The rooftop is conceived as a two storey penthouse office with the exoteric structure continuing on as a pergola terminating the building’s relationship with the sky. A service core runs through the center of each of the buildings with the main passenger lifts pulled out of the trellised prism within an independent glass shaft.
